Dr. Katrin Schuhen is the inventor, researcher, developer and founder of the non-profit company Wasser 3.0 (Wasser 3.0 gGmbH).

Until May 2018, she did this as a Junior Professor of Organic and Ecological Chemistry at the University of Koblenz-Landau.

After gaining her doctorate in chemistry at Ruprecht-Karls University Heidelberg in 2007, she worked in the chemical and medical technology industry for five years before founding her research group in 2012. Since then, she and her colleagues have been researching inorganic-organic hybrid materials for applications in (waste) water purification.

In 2015, she was honored with the GreenTec Award in the category "Water and Wastewater" and was awarded the Environmental Award Rhineland Palatinate 2017 and the Hans Raab Environmental Award 2016 as well as the Partlife Environmental Award 2019. Dr. Katrin Schuhen stands with her team at Wasser 3.0 (www.wasserdreinull.com) for a completely new approach to remove micropollutants sustainably from our water. Waters contaminated with micropollutants are highly complex systems.

Wasser 3.0 meets them with a maximum of interdisciplinary expertise, innovation and idealism. As part of research projects, marketable solutions have been developed since 2012 to eliminate microplastics, pharmaceuticals, industrial chemicals, heavy metals, pesticides, hormones, X-ray contrast media and other pollutants.

The methods made by Wasser 3.0 can be flexibly applied wherever micropollutants contaminate the water. The solutions are cost-effective, sustainable and the result of the overriding concern: improving water quality and protecting the ecosystem worldwide. Since July 2019, the team of Wasser 3.0 have been successfully operating the first pilot plant at a wastewater treatment plant in Germany, which is able to remove microplastics from urban wastewater.

Verbraucherinnen und Verbraucher sind verunsichert und wünschen sich Aufklärung: Wie gelangt Mikroplastik in die Umwelt und in Lebensmittel? Werden Mikroplastikpartikel vom menschlichen Verdauungssystem aufgenommen? Sind Mikroplastikpartikel in Lebensmitteln schädlich für den Menschen? In welchem Ausmaß ist Mikroplastik in Produkten des Alltags vorhanden? Und welche aktuellen Studien gibt es hierzu bereits?

Das 18. BfR-Forum Verbraucherschutz Mikroplastik ging am 06. und 07. Juni 2019 den Fragen am ersten Veranstaltungstag aus aktueller wissenschaftlicher Perspektive nach. Am zweiten Veranstaltungstag folgte auf kurze Eingangsstatements einer Auswahl der an der Diskussion beteiligten Institutionen und Stakeholder eine Podiumsdiskussion.
