Jess de Jesus de Pinho Pinhal is a philosopher, technologist, lecturer and speaker for a variety of audiences.
Jess explores the ethics and politics of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and computer technologies, focusing on diversity, justice, and governance. They talked about: fair and intersectional AI, the metaverse, Web 3.0 and decentralisation, power and the future of tech governance during keynote talks, courses and through other media. In particular, they investigate how historically and culturally situated norms get encoded in computer technologies and become global and universal rules beyond democratic scrutiny.
In 2022, they conducted a research stay at the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence (University of Cambridge) to study the scalability and decentralisation of tech applications and their global impact on human societies. In 2020, they founded the Berlin Ethics Lab, a platform to address societal challenges brought by AI with academics, activists and businesses. In 2017, they won the international entrepreneurship competition Journey Re by Hannover Re with a Machine Learning solution.
Jess earned an MBA from ESCP Europe Business School in 2016, a BA in Philosophy from the University Côte d'Azur in 2015, and an MSc in Engineering from Telecom Physique Strasbourg in 2012.
