Ariane Papke is doing her Ph.D. in mathematics about the dynamics of atmospheric vortices. She investigates vortex attenuation or intensification due to shear flows. Fluid dynamics has accompanied her since she studied physics and she shared her passion with other scientists at several conferences and research stays. Ariane loves to teach and has encouraged and supported students at all levels with a plethora of different backgrounds.

What is ... the Navier-Stokes equation?
This is Ariane Papke's talk "What is ... the Navier-Stokes equation?" at the Berlin Mathematical School (BMS) "What is ...?" seminar. The talk was given on Friday, April 25, 2014, 1:00pm.
The motion of a fluid can be described by the Navier-Stokes equations. We discuss the forces acting on a fluid element and explore some applications.
