Dr. Isabella Hermann is an analyst and speaker in the area of science-fiction. Holding a doctorate in political science, she focuses on the question of how the genre reflects new technologies, socio-political value systems and global politics.
This includes topics such as artificial intelligence and robotics as well as climate change and Mars colonisation or even mobility and education – science-fiction basically provides a commentary on the present “from the future” on every topic that concerns us right now.
Science-fiction oscillates between what is indeed technically and socially imaginable and what is metaphorical – allowing for two very different levels of interpretation, which is what makes the genre so fascinating.
Science fiction often paints negative and dystopian images of the future as a critique of existing structures. However, we can also find inspiring designs of positive futures – up to the development of one's own science fiction stories of a better future in various workshop formats.
Studies of Political Science at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich (2004-2008) and PhD in International Relations at the Goethe-University in Frankfurt/Main (2009-2014).
Work experience as desk officer at a political foundation (2015-2017) and as a consultant at a political advisory firm (2017/2018); steering of a working group on Artificial Intelligence & Human Responsibility at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (2018-2021); Programme Director of the Present Futures Forum at the Technical University of Berlin (2021).
