Cinzia Bianco is a visiting fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, based in Berlin, where she is working on political, security and economic developments in the Arabian Peninsula and Gulf region and relations with Europe. Additionally, she is a senior analyst at Gulf State Analytics. Previously, Bianco was a research fellow for the European Commission’s project on EU-GCC relations ‘Sharaka’ between 2013 and 2014.
She holds an MA degree in Middle East and Mediterranean Studies from King’s College London and a PhD in Middle East Politics from the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom, where she worked on threat perceptions in the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) after the 2011 Arab uprisings.

On October 21, 2020, Arab Center Washington DC (ACW) hosted a webinar titled “UAE-Bahrain Normalization with Israel: Regional Implications and Gulf Reactions.”Speakers discussed the reactions of Gulf Arab governments and citizens to the United Arab Emirates-Bahrain normalization deal with Israel as well as the regional implications and global impact of the agreement.The event featured Abdullah Baabood, Visiting Professor at Waseda University in Tokyo; Cinzia Bianco, Gulf Research Fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations in Berlin; and Jane Kinninmont, Impact Director at the European Leadership Network in London. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a visible impact on Saudi Arabia's economy. The combination of low oil prices and lockdown measures has led to disruptions in critical economic sectors, a widening fiscal deficit and downgraded growth prospects that are expected to alter government commitments to Vision 2030.
These challenges also come amid a controversial oil price war and ensuing OPEC+ production cuts, challenges in the US-Saudi relationship, the war in Yemen and ongoing tensions with Iran. The G20 to be held in Riyadh in November was expected to showcase Saudi Arabia’s economic progress and Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman's leadership, but the Kingdom’s standing in the summit will depend on how it tackles the far-reaching consequences of the pandemic and how it manages its regional and international relations.
