Bio:

A Lebanese activist, digital communication specialist, and technologist.
Currently, Abir works with Human Rights Watch as their Information Security Technologist. Prior to that, she was the communications and outreach director for Raseef22 a PAN Arab independent media platform, and also the outreach director for Majal, a network of digital platforms centered on securing freedom of expression and access to information.
Abir’s work and research focus on women's rights, digital rights, and the intersection of gender and tech. Abir sits on Article19's international board, OTF's advisory council, and the grant advisory board of AccessNow. She also founded HammamRadio, A feminist participatory radio, launched from Berlin where she is based.

Für Menschenrechtsverteidiger auf der ganzen Welt ist es eine oft lebenswichtige Grundlage, um Informationen zu teilen und sich Gehör zu verschaffen. Gleichzeitig haben Online-Überwachung, Zensur, Hasskommentare und Datenmissbrauch drastisch zugenommen. In vielen Entwicklungsländern sind die Auswirkungen besonders alarmierend. Internetabschaltungen im Kontext von Wahlkämpfen oder politischen Protesten haben erheblich zugenommen. Digitale Überwachung, häufig im Namen nationaler Sicherheit, ist zur dauerhaften Gefahr für viele Reporter und Aktivisten geworden. Während der Cambridge-Analytica-Skandal die Aufmerksamkeit auf den massiven Missbrauch von persönlichen Daten in Europa und den Vereinigten Staaten gelenkt hat, wird das Abgreifen von Nutzerdaten in einkommensschwachen Ländern, in denen es an Daten- und Privatsphärenschutz mangelt, häufig ignoriert.

Digital attacks against human rights defenders have expanded dramatically. Vaguely defined anti-terrorism legislation and spyware allow for targeted surveillance; trolls manipulate online content and conduct intimidating smear-campaigns. Against this backdrop of shrinking space and global backlash, holistic strategies for digital rights defenders are crucial. The session presents experiences from human rights activists in the Global South and discusses success stories and lessons learned from digital security and privacy initiatives.
