Fred Meier-Menzel

Fred Meier-Menzel (1965) earned her Diploma in Communication Design at the University of Applied Sciences and Art in Hannover, Germany, in 1988. Shortly after, she moved to London to study figurative drawing and sculpting at the Heatherly School of Fine Arts. In 1991 Fred returned to Germany to establish the design office “Atelier Fred” in Berlin, with renowned clients such as IDZ-International Design Center in Berlin, the Museum of European Cultures and the communication agency Scholz &Friends. From 2002 - 2005 Fred worked as a lecturer for Costume and Life Drawing in HTW Berlin, University of Applied Sciences. In 2003 Fred founded the “AktsalonDrawing Society”, an Arts Forum offering conceptually distinguished public drawing sessions. Among the classes she offered in the Aktsalon were movement drawing, group exhibitions, anatomy seminaries and performance related sessions. In 2006, Fred was appointed professor at the German University in Cairo (GUC) where she worked as Head of the Drawing Department until 2011. She was one of the founding members of the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Arts were she taught Image Language and Nature Studies and supervised Bachelor Students in the field of Communication Design. During her stay in Cairo Fred has been working with esteemed institutions such as the Goethe-Institute and Townhouse gallery to organize exhibitions such as the “fashion and identity“ show (2008). In 2015 Fred defended her doctoral thesis at the Bauhaus University in Weimar with the grade magna cum laude (1). Her field of interest includes body studies for designers as reflected by gesture, language and movement. Fred currently supervises a series of inter-cultural workshops in Germany and Egypt.
