Anna Kohlweis, born in 1984 in Klagenfurt, Austria, is an interdisciplinary artist and vocalist merging visual arts, sound art, songwriting, fiber art, poetry, video, and illustration. Anna Kohlweis has been a performer and recording artist both as Paper Bird (2006-2011) and Squalloscope (2011-present) and utilizes visual arts and music in equal measures to create a narrative universe highly influenced by the politics of being alive, the intricacies of language, color, and texture, impending doom, stupid hope, and the intensely personal.
She studied theater- film- and media studies at the University of Vienna before switching to the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in 2009, where she received her Mag.art. (M.A.) in fine arts in Ashley Hans Scheirl's class for contextual painting in 2014.
Her work has been featured in various magazines and on radio and television in Austria and Germany. She has exhibited and performed in Austria, Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic and the United States and was an artist in residence at Paul Artspace in St.Louis, Missouri, the Elsewhere Museum in Greensboro, North Carolina, Red Bull Music Academy New York City and Musikfest Waidhofen a.d. Thaya. She has created a multidisciplinary body of work for Center for Literature Burg Hülshoff and has produced soundtracks for short films and documentaries like #widerstand, Wir fliegen, and Doppelgaenger. Anna Kohlweis is one half of the band Twin Tooth (with Jan Preißler) and one half of songwriting duo Squalloscope & Andy the Doorbum. She received the Art Award of the City of Villach in 2015, taught the songwriting workshop and hosts the illustration workshop at Intertonale & Aktionstage in Scheibbs, Austria, was the recipient of the state of Carinthia’s annual scholarship for music in 2019, and is an artist in residence at Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris and Tides Institute in Eastport, Maine, in 2022.
Anna Kohlweis is currently based in Vienna, Austria.
Her latest music releases are the EPs, “Annette” and “Old Songs” (2020 on Camp Frienemy), and the album “Weightbearer” (2022, Camp Frienemy).
