Intellectual Property, Lessig and the EU Copyright Directive

This is a talk/discussion that took place at the Papers We Love Berlin Meetup in April 2019. Usually, at the meetup interesting papers are presented and discussed. This session was based on Chapter 10 "Intellectual Property" from Lawrence Lessig's Book "Code 2.0" and took this as a starting point for discussing the new EU Copyright Directive.

Es hora de decir bye-bye. Using python for sociolinguistic analysis

This talk is about the collection and explanation of the English occurrences in a corpus of articles from the US Spanish language journal "Siempre mujer". We will walk through the workflow from collecting the articles, identifying the English occurrences and trying to classify and explain them. We will have a look at the python modules for scraping and natural language processing used for the project (pattern, request and nltk), try to evaluate their suitability for the task and discuss alternative approaches. As an added bonus we'll also briefly touch on some theories from the sociolinguistics in an attempt to understand why English was used in the particular cases.
